RAGIN RED FLOWERING DOGWOOD
Cornus florida Ragin' Red™ (Cornus florida 'JN13' PP29424) is a relatively new cultivar of the native Eastern Dogwood, celebrated for having some of the darkest red floral bracts available on the market. In late spring, it erupts in a dramatic display of deep crimson to burgundy blooms that appear even more intense than the popular 'Cherokee Chief'. New foliage emerges with a distinct reddish-burgundy cast before maturing to a rich dark green and is followed by bright red berries in late summer that are a favorite for local songbirds. By autumn, the leaves shift once more, transforming into a brilliant show of burgundy, purple, and orange. It typically maintains a rounded, upright habit, maturing to a height and spread of roughly 20 feet.
Ragin' Red™ Dogwood thrives in morning sun and dappled afternoon shade. While it can tolerate full sun in cooler northern climates, afternoon shade is essential in the south to prevent leaf scorch and stress. It enjoys well-drained, acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. It is ideal as a specimen plant or in woodland gardens where it can receive the dappled light it enjoys.
