VELVET DUSK™ TATARIAN DOGWOOD

Cornus alba Velvet Dusk™ (Velvet Dusk™ Tatarian Dogwood) is a striking deciduous shrub valued for its multi-season visual interest and reliable garden performance. In spring and summer, it showcases refined, deep forest-green foliage with a subtly soft texture that provides a rich backdrop for border plantings. Late spring brings clusters of delicate white blooms that yield small, pale berries, attracting local birds and pollinators. However, its true showstopper moment arrives in autumn and winter - as the leaves drop, they reveal dense, brilliant dark purple to vivid crimson stems that stand out dramatically against snowy winter landscapes and bare dormant borders.

When choosing its location, place Velvet Dusk™ in full sun to partial shade, keeping in mind that maximum sunlight produces the most vibrant stem coloration during the winter months. It adapts to a wide range of soil types, including damp or occasionally boggy areas, making it an excellent candidate for rain gardens, low spots, or mass plantings along property boundaries where erosion control is needed.

Planting Tips ⓘ

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in full sun to partial shade; it performs best in sunny locations where stem color will be most vibrant. It is exceptionally adaptable to various soil types and thrives in moist or wet soils. Pruning: Like all C. sericea types, the stem color fades on older wood. To maintain the bright yellow 'twig' color, perform rejuvenation pruning (coppicing) in late winter: cut one-third to one-half of the oldest, dullest stems to the ground. This forces a flush of vibrant, new yellow growth for the following winter season.
