Zone: 5AMETHYST FALLS WISTERIA
Wisteria frutescens 'Amethyst Falls' is commonly referred to as Amethyst Falls American Wisteria. It is a hardy, deciduous, fast-growing, ornamental vining shrub that features a compact habit and earlier purple blooms. It is also less aggressive than other Wisteria. It is noteworthy for its small, glossy dark green leaves and fragrant purple flowers that gracefully cascade downward on new wood in late spring. It is known to have a lighter, repeat bloom in summer. Flowers attract hummingbirds, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators. Pruning can be done in winter if needed for training on arbors, fences, etc.
Amethyst Falls Wisteria is easy to grow and maintain since it is a sterile variety. It is noninvasive and thrives in full sun in rich, fertile, evenly moist, well-drained soils. A layer of mulch is most beneficial. It is both deer resistant and drought tolerant.
