Weigela florida 'Verweig9' PP35146 Proven Winners® Color Choice® Midnight Sun® is commonly referred to as Midnight Sun® Weigela. This Proven Winners® Color Choice® selection is a compact, neat-mounded deciduous shrub prized for its exceptional foliage transformations. Unlike many purple-leafed varieties that can fade or "muddy" in summer heat, Midnight Sun® maintains a deep, glossy orange-red to burgundy hue throughout the growing season. In late spring, it produces a modest display of pinkish-purple flowers, but the plant's primary appeal is its consistent, intense leaf color and its naturally symmetrical, bun-shaped habit. Reaching only 12-15 inches in height and spread, it is one of the most petite and refined colorful Weigelas available on the market today.
To maximize the intensity of its dark foliage, Midnight Sun® should be planted in full sun, as too much shade will cause the leaves to trend toward a standard green. It thrives in well-drained soil with average moisture and is highly adaptable to various soil textures, making it a rugged choice for urban environments. To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with full sun to partial shade. Water regularly but avoid overwatering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune immediately after the main spring flush of flowers fades to maintain shape; avoid pruning in late winter or early spring, as this will remove the flower buds for the coming season.
