SOUTHERN CHARM MULLEIN

Verbascum 'Southern Charm' is a versatile and elegant perennial, celebrated for its soft, pastel color palette and reliable performance in the perennial garden. The flowers emerge in an array of sophisticated hues - ranging from creamy white and pale lavender to a delicate, dusty rose - each featuring a prominent, contrasting dark purple center that adds depth and interest. It is slightly more compact than many other Verbascum species, producing graceful, airy spires that rise from a tidy basal rosette of grey-green, felted leaves. Its muted color scheme makes it an excellent "bridge" plant, as it harmonizes beautifully with both cool-toned perennials and hotter-colored landscape features, bringing a refined, cottage-garden aesthetic to any planting bed.

For optimal growth, site 'Southern Charm' in a location that receives full sun and provides sharp, exceptional drainage. Like other Verbascum, it is remarkably drought-tolerant once established but struggles in damp, heavy, or poorly drained soils, which can lead to root and crown rot during the wetter months. It is an ideal candidate for rock gardens, gravel beds, or well-amended borders where it can be protected from winter saturation. To maintain a long blooming window, deadhead the spent flower spikes promptly, which often encourages it to produce a secondary flush of color.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Because Verbascum is highly susceptible to crown rot in heavy or damp soils, plant it slightly high. Creating a small, well-draining mound about 1-2 inches above surrounding soil level, ensures that water sheds away from the base of the rosette. Full sun and open exposure are most important for maintaining sturdy, form.
