JAPANESE TOAD LILY
Tricyrtis hirta, commonly known as the Toad Lily, is an enchanting shade-loving perennial that brings a touch of the exotic to the late-season garden. It is characterized by its arching, zigzagging stems covered in distinctively hairy, lance-shaped leaves that give it its specific epithet. From late summer through autumn, it produces clusters of charming, bell-shaped flowers that are white to pale lavender and heavily speckled with distinctive purple-to-maroon spots. These intricate, orchid-like blooms are often borne in the leaf axils, creating a captivating display just when other perennial color begins to fade in the garden.
As a hardy perennial in USDA Zones 4-9, Tricyrtis hirta thrives in part shade to full shade and prefers soil that is rich in organic matter and kept consistently moist. While it is not overly demanding, it is important to site it in a location protected from harsh, direct sunlight, which can burn its foliage, and to ensure the soil does not dry out during the heat of summer. It is a perfect choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, or containers where its unique architectural form can be appreciated up close. It requires minimal maintenance, though a layer of organic mulch will help retain moisture and keep roots cool.
