Zone: 9NANOUK SPIDERWORT
Tradescantia fluminensis 'Nanouk' is a popular and eye-catching cultivar known for its vivid, variegated foliage. Unlike many of its hardy garden-dwelling cousins, 'Nanouk' features succulent, oval leaves striped with shades of cream, bright green, and vibrant pink or magenta. It maintains a compact, trailing habit, making it an excellent choice for hanging baskets or as a tabletop specimen. It grows relatively quickly, producing small, white to pinkish flowers on occasion, though the primary attraction remains its striking, multi-colored leaf pattern that stands out in any collection.
For best results, Tradescantia 'Nanouk' requires bright, indirect light to maintain its colorful variegation; too little light will cause the plant to lose its pink tones and become leggy. It prefers a well-draining potting mix and should be watered only when the top inch or two of soil has dried out - it is sensitive to waterlogged soil, which can lead to stem rot. While it can be grown outdoors in protected, shady spots during the summer, it is not winter-hardy in colder climates like Ohio and should be kept as a houseplant. It has a USDA Zone of 9-11. Regular pinching of the stem tips is recommended to encourage a bushier, more branched habit rather than long, trailing vines.
