Zone: 9SPIDERWORT
Tradescantia, commonly known as Spiderwort, is a genus of easy-going, long-lived perennials that offer a distinct, grassy texture to the garden. It forms loose, arching clumps of succulent, linear foliage that persists throughout the growing season. The hallmark of this genus is its unique, three-petaled flowers, which come in brilliant shades of blue, purple, magenta, pink, or white, often featuring contrasting yellow stamens. While individual blooms typically last only for a single day - often opening in the cool morning and closing by the afternoon - it is a prolific producer, offering a steady succession of flowers from late spring well into the summer.
Regarding placement and care, Tradescantia is exceptionally adaptable but performs best in part shade to full sun, though afternoon shade is highly recommended in hotter climates to prevent the foliage from browning. They thrive in moist, well-drained, fertile soil and can even handle temporary wet conditions, making them excellent candidates for rain gardens or low-lying areas.
