Zone: 3CREEPING THYME
Thymus praecox 'Coccineus', commonly known as Red Creeping Thyme, is an exceptional low-growing, mat-forming perennial that serves as one of the most popular groundcovers for sunny landscapes. This evergreen variety creates a dense, carpet-like cushion of tiny, aromatic, dark green leaves that release a pleasant herbal scent when brushed or stepped upon. In early to mid-summer, its foliage is almost entirely obscured by a profusion of tiny, tubular, carmine-red to deep pink flowers. Its prostrate growth habit and fine texture make it an invaluable tool for adding soft, living color to the smallest of spaces, effectively suppressing weeds while providing a vibrant floral display.
To achieve the best results, Red Creeping Thyme should be planted in full sun and very well-drained soil. It is remarkably drought-tolerant once established and thrives in lean or rocky soils where other plants might struggle; however, it will not tolerate "wet feet" or standing water, which can lead to root rot. Red Creeping Thyme is the ideal choice for planting between flagstones, along garden paths, or in rock gardens, as it handles light foot traffic exceptionally well. It is also a fantastic option for cascading over stone walls or as a drought-resistant lawn alternative in small, arid sections of the yard.

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with a slightly alkaline pH. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Prune back after flowering to maintain shape. Use as a low-maintenance groundcover. Maintenance is minimal, though a light shearing after the flowering period can help keep the mat tight and encourage a fresh flush of attractive foliage.
