Thalictrum dasycarpum, commonly known as Purple Meadow Rue, is a majestic native perennial that adds significant height and an airy, sophisticated texture to the landscape. Reaching impressive heights of 3 to 5 feet, it is most notable for its striking, dark purple-to-maroon stems that contrast beautifully against its delicate, bluish-green foliage. The leaves are compound and fern-like, closely resembling a large Columbine or Maidenhair fern. In late spring to mid-summer, it produces large, loose panicles of fuzzy, cream-to-purplish flowers. Because it is a dioecious species, the male plants often display showier, more pendulous stamens, creating a soft, misty effect that catches the light and provides a distinct architectural presence in the garden.
Purple Meadow Rue performs best in full sun to part shade and thrives in moist, rich, humus-heavy soil. While it is remarkably adaptable and can handle more sun than many other Meadow Rues, it requires consistent moisture and will suffer in sites that dry out completely during the peak of summer. Given its stature, it is an ideal candidate for the back of a perennial border, native meadow plantings, or the transition zones along woodland edges. It also performs exceptionally well in rain gardens or near water features where the soil remains damp. Minimal maintenance is required; however, in particularly windy sites, the tall stems may benefit from light staking.

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in moist, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize lightly in the spring with a balanced fertilizer.
