COMMON BALDCYPRESS
Taxodium distichum, commonly known as the Bald Cypress, is a long-lived, canopy-sized conifer native to the saturated floodplains, swamps, and river basins of the Southeastern United States. Capable of growing 50 to 75 feet tall with a broad, pyramidal habit, it is an unusual specialized evolutionary intermediate: a deciduous conifer. Its soft, feathery, needle-like leaves are arranged alternate-spirally on two-ranked branchlets, emerging light green in spring before maturing into a deep sage. As fall approaches, its foliage undergoes a shift, turning a striking copper, or bronze before dropping to expose a fibrous, reddish-brown bark and strong architectural interest. In aquatic or periodically inundated environments, mature specimens develop pronounced fluted, buttressed trunk bases and produce specialized woody root projections called pneumatophores ("cypress knees"), which emerge vertically above the water line to aid in gas exchange and structural anchoring.
Culturally, Taxodium distichum displays remarkable environmental adaptability for landscape and municipal site utilization. While naturally adapted to standing water and saturated alluvial soils (pH 5.0 - 7.5), it performs surprisingly well in standard upland clay soils, urban streetscapes, and dry lawn conditions once established, proving highly tolerant of pollution and soil compaction. It prefers full sun and maintains a clean central leader with minimal structural pruning required.
