DEBONAIR® PONDCYPRESS

Taxodium ascendens Debonair® (botanically designated as cultivar 'Morris' and sometimes classified as Taxodium distichum var. imbricarium 'Morris') is a premium, highly refined selection of the Pond Cypress. It is distinguished by its exceptionally uniform, narrowly pyramidal habit and elegant, slightly pendulous branching. Maturing to a height of 40 to 50 feet with a refined spread of just 15 feet, it features fine-textured, thread-like foliage that drapes gracefully from slanting shoots. Its foliage emerges a vibrant bright green in spring, retains a clean glaucous hue through summer, and transitions into a magnificent, rich copper-orange to russet-bronze tone in fall before shedding its branchlets.

Debonair® is widely regarded as one of the finest Taxodium introductions for structural performance and site adaptability. Unlike wild-type pond cypress that can exhibit irregular, open crowns, Debonair® reliably develops a straight central leader and dense, symmetrical branching without extensive corrective pruning. Hardy across USDA Zones 5 through 10, it exhibits exceptional urban toughness, adapting readily to saturated soils, heavy clay, and drought-prone streetscapes or parking lot islands. A key landscape benefit is that when grown in standard upland landscape soils, it typically does not produce surface cypress knees, eliminating turf maintenance hazards while providing high architectural impact, superior storm resistance, and vibrant fall color.

Planting Tips ⓘ

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize annually with a balanced fertilizer. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and promote healthy growth.
