SUMMER ROMANCE BETONY
Stachys 'Summer Romance' is a high-performance hybrid that brings a sophisticated, deep-toned elegance to the sunny garden. It is prized for its uniform, mounded habit of crinkled, dark green foliage that remains lush and attractive from spring through frost. Reaching a foliage height of 15 to 18 inches with a spread of 24-30 inches, it forms a dense, weed-suppressing mat that acts as a polished anchor in the landscape, showing excellent resistance to the leaf diseases and "melting out" often seen in woolly varieties.
In early to mid-summer, 'Summer Romance' truly shines as sturdy, upright stems rise above the dark green mound to a height of about 20 inches. These stems are topped with thick, vertical spikes of vibrant, deep violet-pink flowers that create a bold and romantic display. The blooms are a powerful magnet for butterflies and bees, providing a reliable and prolific nectar source during the peak of the growing season.
For the most intense flower color and the strongest stems, plant 'Summer Romance' in a location that receives full sun. It is a rugged and versatile perennial that thrives in average to moist, well-drained soil; once established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant and heat-resistant. In the landscape, its tidy shape and rich floral spikes make it an ideal choice for the middle of a sunny border, as a high-impact mass planting, or as a reliable structural element in a pollinator-focused garden.
