COTTON CANDY BETONY
Stachys officinalis 'Pink Cotton Candy' is a delightful and high-performance hybrid that brings a soft, sugary pop of color to the sunny garden. A standout selection from the breeding work of Richard Hawke at the Chicago Botanic Garden, 'Pink Cotton Candy' is prized for its uniform, mounded habit of crisp, textured, mid-green leaves. Reaching a foliage height of 18 to 24 inches, it forms a dense and attractive carpet that remains lush and green throughout the entire growing season, showing excellent resistance to the leaf diseases that can plague other varieties.
In early to mid-summer, 'Pink Cotton Candy' earns its name as sturdy, upright stems rise above the foliage to a total height of 24 inches. These stems are topped with thick, bi-color spikes of soft pink and light lavender-pink flowers that create a whimsical, airy effect in the landscape. The blooms are a favorite for bees and butterflies, providing a reliable nectar source during the heat of the season. Unlike the woolly Lamb's Ear, this variety features clean, green foliage that stands up beautifully to high humidity without "melting out."
For the most prolific blooming and the strongest stems, plant 'Pink Cotton Candy' in a location that receives full sun. It is a rugged and versatile perennial that thrives in average to moist, well-drained soil; once established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant.
