LITTLE REDHEAD INDIAN PINK

Spigelia marilandica 'Little Redhead' is a stunning, high-performance selection of the native Indian Pink that is highly sought after for its intense color and refined habit. Unlike the species, it is remarkably uniform, forming a dense, upright mound of clean, forest-green foliage that reaches a mature height of 24 - 30 inches. In late spring and early summer, it is topped with a profusion of unique, tubular flowers that are a vivid, "stoplight" red on the outside, opening to reveal a bright yellow, star-shaped interior. This dramatic color combination makes it one of the most eye-catching perennials for the shaded or partially shaded landscape.

To ensure 'Little Redhead' Indian Pink performs at its peak, it should be planted in a location that receives partial shade, though it can handle more sun in Ohio if provided with consistent moisture. It thrives in rich, organic, well-drained soil and, while it is slow to emerge in the spring, it grows vigorously once the soil warms up. 'Little Redhead' is exceptionally hardy in USDA Zones 5 - 9 and is notably more robust and floriferous than the straight species. Maintenance is minimal; simply remove spent flower stems to keep the plant looking tidy and cut the foliage back to the ground in late autumn or early spring. Its nectar-rich, upright tubes are a premier magnet for hummingbirds, making it a must-have for any pollinator-focused garden.
