GOLDEN SUNSET® YELLOW PRAIRIE GRASS

Sorghastrum nutans Golden Sunset® PP33776 'MNYG318153' is commonly referred to as Golden Sunset Yellow Prairie Grass. This patented grass makes a good addition to the landscape. It is similar to Calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster', just larger. It has a persistent upright stature, olive-green foliage and yellow flowers in mid August. It develops seed heads late summer which can reach up to 12' tall.

Golden Sunset® is pest and disease free. It thrives in full sun in rich, silty-loam, well-drained soils. It can be drought tolerant once established. It is a larval host plant of the pollinator butterfly Pepper-and-Salt Skipper Butterfly and several grasshoppers. Its seed heads and clumping habit allows for a private nesting spot for many prairie-dwelling birds and wildlife.

Sorghastrum nutans 'Golden Sunset' (Indiangrass or Yellow Prairie Grass) is a stately, native warm-season grass that offers exceptional structural beauty, characterized by its upright, clump-forming habit and metallic-gold, feathery plumes that appear in late summer and persist into the fall. It is exceptionally drought-tolerant once established and thrives in a wide range of soil conditions, including heavy clay. As a true North American native, it is a powerhouse for local biodiversity, providing essential food and habitat for birds. Cut the foliage back to the ground in late winter or early spring to refresh the plant for the upcoming season.
