NARROW LEAF BLUE-EYED GRASS

Sisyrinchium angustifolium, commonly known as Blue-Eyed Grass, is a charming native perennial that bridges the gap between ornamental grasses and flowering wildflowers. Despite its grassy appearance, it is actually a member of the Iris family. It forms dense, tufted clumps of narrow, sword-shaped green leaves that typically reach a mature height of 15-18 inches. From late spring through early summer, the foliage is topped by a profusion of small, star-shaped violet-blue flowers, each highlighted by a bright yellow center. These delicate blooms open in the sunshine and close during cloudy weather or in the evening, adding a dynamic and natural feel to the landscape.

To keep Blue-Eyed Grass performing at its peak, it should be planted in a location that receives full sun to partial shade. It is highly adaptable to a variety of soil types, including damp or poorly drained areas, making it an excellent choice for rain gardens, cottage borders, or along the edges of woodlands. While it is quite hardy in USDA Zones 4-9, it prefers consistent moisture and may go dormant if the soil dries out completely. Maintenance is very low; simply shear the foliage back by half after the flowering period to encourage fresh new growth and maintain a tidy, mounded habit for the rest of the season.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH. Water regularly, but avoid overwatering. Provide partial shade to full sun, depending on the desired color. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
