THUNDERHEAD STONECROP
Sedum 'Thunderhead' is a massive, high-impact upright stonecrop that commands attention with its dark, dramatic foliage and colossal flower heads. It is prized for its sturdy, deep maroon to beet-red stems that stay remarkably upright, reaching a height of 24 to 30 inches without flopping. Throughout the spring and summer, 'Thunderhead' features thick, succulent, grey-green leaves that are heavily tinted with a smoky purple-bronze, providing a dark and structural presence in the sunny garden.
In late summer, Sedum 'Thunderhead' earns its name as it is topped with enormous, rounded flower clusters in a deep, glowing rose-red. These giant blooms are significantly larger and more intensely colored than those of traditional upright varieties, creating a "storm" of color that acts as a powerful magnet for butterflies and bees. Even after the initial bloom, the dried seed heads turn a rich mahogany-brown, providing excellent architectural interest and a food source for birds throughout the winter months.
For the most intense foliage color and the strongest, most upright stems, plant Sedum 'Thunderhead' in a location that receives full sun. It is a rugged and exceptionally drought-tolerant perennial that thrives in average to poor, well-drained soil; avoiding over-fertilization is key to maintaining its tight, structural form.
