RED WIGGLE STONECROP

Sedum ochroleucum 'Red Wiggle' is a playful and highly textured groundcover stonecrop that adds a fine, needle-like quality to the garden. It features sprawling stems covered in thin, succulent leaves that resemble tiny spruce branches. In the spring and summer, the foliage displays a vibrant two-tone effect, with bright lime-green tips contrasting against deep red or burgundy bases. As temperatures drop in the autumn and winter, the entire plant often intensifies into a rich, solid bronze-red, providing excellent multi-season interest and a "wiggly" texture that stands out among broader-leaved perennials.

For the most dramatic color contrast, plant Sedum 'Red Wiggle' in a location that receives full sun, though it can tolerate light afternoon shade in hotter climates. It is exceptionally drought-tolerant and thrives in poor, rocky, or sandy soils, provided they are well-drained.

In the landscape, its low-growing and spreading habit makes it an ideal choice for filling crevices in rock gardens, softening the edges of stone walls, or acting as a colorful "filler" in succulent troughs and containers. Maintenance is minimal-simply clear away any winter debris in early spring to make room for the colorful new growth to emerge.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with a slightly alkaline pH. Water sparingly during the first growing season, as this plant is drought-tolerant. Fertilize lightly in the spring with a balanced fertilizer. Prune in the spring to maintain shape and promote new growth.
