NIGHT EMBERS STONECROP
Sedum 'Night Embers' is a premier upright stonecrop that brings a dark, architectural drama to the late-season garden. It is distinguished by its exceptionally dark, succulent foliage that ranges from deep olive to a rich, smoky purple-black. Growing to a sturdy height of 24 to 30 inches, it is supported by thick, burgundy stems that maintain a very upright, narrow-columnar habit even as it matures. In late summer and early autumn,'Matrona' is crowned with dense, flattened flower clusters in a vibrant, mauve-pink that matures into a warm bronzed shade by fall.
For the most intense foliage color and strongest growth, plant Sedum 'Matrona' in a location that receives full sun, which ensures the stems remain upright and the leaves maintain their darkest hue. It is a rugged and drought-tolerant perennial that thrives in average to poor, well-drained soil; avoiding over-fertilization is essential to prevent the stems from becoming too lush and heavy.
In the landscape, 'Matrona' is an ideal choice for the middle or back of a sunny border, as a high-contrast companion to golden or silver-foliaged plants, or as a reliable specimen in rock gardens. Maintenance is straightforward-simply leave the dried flower heads for winter interest and cut the stems back to the ground in early spring before the new growth appears.
