FROSTED FIRE STONECROP
Sedum 'Frosted Fire' is a luminous, upright stonecrop that brings a refined, architectural quality to the garden. A variegated sport of the well-known Sedum 'Autumn Fire', 'Frosted Fire' is distinguished by its thick, succulent leaves of gray-green, each edged with a wide, creamy-white border. Growing to a sturdy height of 12 to 15 inches, it maintains a dense, upright habit throughout the spring and summer, offering a bright foliage accent even before it begins to bloom. In late summer, it is crowned with large, flattened flower clusters that start as pale green buds, transition into a soft rosy-pink, and eventually mature to a deep bronze-red by autumn.
For the most vibrant variegation and strongest stems, plant 'Frosted Fire' in a location that receives full sun. It is a rugged and adaptable perennial that thrives in average to poor, well-drained soil; avoiding overly fertile soil is essential to prevent the stems from becoming too heavy and flopping. Once established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant and requires very little supplemental water.
In the landscape, Sedum 'Frosted Fire' is an ideal choice for the middle of a sunny border, as a high-contrast mass planting, or as a reliable specimen in rock gardens. Maintenance is straightforward-simply leave the dried flower heads for winter interest and cut the stems back to the ground in early spring before the new growth appears.
