To help Schizachyrium scoparium types settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in full sun in lean, dry, well-draining soil. Schizachyrium scoparium (Little Bluestem) is a quintessential North American native grass, beloved for its fine texture, upright clumping habit, and spectacular seasonal transformation, shifting from a cool blue-green in summer to a stunning, rusty bronze-red in autumn. Little Bluestem is exceptionally drought-tolerant once established and thrives in poor soil; avoid rich, fertile garden soil or over-fertilizing, as excess nutrients will cause the stems to lose their upright structure and flop. Cut the foliage back to the ground in late winter or early spring to refresh the plant for the new season.
