COMMON SASSAFRAS
Sassafras albidum, commonly called Sassafras, is an ornamental, pyramidal, deciduous tree with tiered horizontal branching found in wooded areas and fields. It spreads by root suckers to form colonies in the wild. Female trees have attractive greenish-yellow flower clusters in spring that give way to bluish-black berries in September. Its mahogany bark is ridged and furrowed.
Sassafras thrive in full to part sun and fertile, slightly acidic, moist soils that are well-drained. It is best used for naturalized areas as the Sassafras needs plenty of room to grow and colonize.
