RED SAGE

Salvia splendens, commonly known as Scarlet Sage or simply the Red Salvia annual, is a quintessential bedding plant prized for its intense, fiery red flower spikes that provide a bold splash of color from late spring until the first frost. These vibrant blooms are densely packed along upright stems, creating a sharp contrast against the lush, heart-shaped, dark green foliage. Its uniform growth habit and reliable, season-long color make them a staple for mass plantings, border edges, and high-impact "thriller" components in mixed patio containers.

To keep Red Salvia performing at its peak, it should be planted in a location that receives full sun, although it is remarkably tolerant of partial shade, which can actually help preserve the flower color in regions with intense summer heat. It thrives in rich, moist, and well-drained soil; unlike the more drought-tolerant perennial sages, this annual variety prefers consistent moisture and should not be allowed to dry out completely. To encourage continuous blooming and a tidy appearance, it is beneficial to pinch off the spent flower spikes (deadheading) throughout the season, which stimulates the plant to produce new buds. While it is treated as an annual in most climates, it is a powerhouse for attracting hummingbirds and butterflies to the garden all summer long.
