Zone: 4MAY NIGHT PERENNIAL SAGE
Salvia nemorosa 'May Night' (Mainacht) is a classic, award-winning Salvia celebrated for its deep violet-blue flower spikes and reliable performance in the landscape. Reaching a mature height of 15 to 18 inches, it features a dense, upright habit with aromatic, grey-green foliage that serves as a rich backdrop for its dark blooms. It is particularly noted for its early and prolific flowering period, often beginning in late spring and continuing well into the summer. Its architectural form and intense color make it a staple for mass plantings, mixed borders, and pollinator-friendly gardens, where it consistently draws in bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
For the best results, 'May Night' should be grown in a full-sun location with well-drained soil, as it does not tolerate "wet feet" over the winter months. Once established, it is remarkably drought-tolerant and stands up well to summer heat and humidity. To maximize its ornamental value and encourage a second flush of color in late summer or early autumn, the spent flower spikes should be sheared back to the basal foliage after the initial bloom fades. In early spring, any remaining dead stems from the previous season can be cut back to make room for new growth. Its natural resistance to deer and rabbits ensures it remains a low-maintenance and dependable performer year after year.
