Zone: 3MARCUS® PERENNIAL SAGE
Salvia nemorosa 'Marcus' is a prized dwarf Salvia known for its compact, mounded habit and intense, deep violet-purple flower spikes. Reaching a mature height of only 9 to 12 inches, it packs a significant visual punch in a smaller footprint, making it an ideal choice for the front of a perennial border, rock gardens, or decorative patio containers. The dark, nectar-rich flowers stand in sharp contrast against its grey-green foliage, providing a long-lasting display of rich color from late spring through early summer. Despite its small stature, 'Marcus' is a powerhouse for supporting local ecosystems, as it is a magnet for bees, butterflies, and other essential pollinators.
To ensure 'Marcus' thrives and maintains its tidy form, it should be planted in a site that receives full sun and features sharply drained soil. It is notably tough and can tolerate heat and humidity, though it performs best with consistent moisture during its first year of establishment. To extend the flowering season and encourage a secondary bloom in late summer, it is best to deadhead or shear back the spent flower spikes once they begin to fade. In early spring, any old or weathered stems from the previous year should be cut back to the ground to allow the fresh, new basal growth to emerge. Its natural resistance to deer and rabbits further enhances its reputation as a reliable, low-maintenance landscape performer.
