Salvia nemorosa 'Caramia' is a refined and improved selection that builds on the best qualities of the classic 'Caradonna', but with a more compact, dense, and floriferous habit. Salvia 'Caramia' is instantly recognizable for its dark, charcoal-purple stems that provide a dramatic vertical structure, supporting an abundance of intense violet-purple flower spikes. Its aromatic foliage is a deep grayish-green, forming a sturdy and uniform mound that stays more contained than its predecessor. This high-energy nectar source is a constant draw for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, providing a prolific burst of rich color that bridges the gap between spring and midsummer.
The ideal spot for Salvia 'Caramia' is a prominent location in full sun with well-draining soil, as it thrives in at least six hours of direct light and can struggle in heavy, waterlogged earth. Because it maintains a tidy and upright height of 18 to 24 inches, it is perfectly suited for the front or middle of a perennial border, as a sophisticated edging along a walkway, or as a structural filler in mixed patio containers. Once the initial massive flush of flowers begins to fade, a quick shearing of the spent spikes will encourage the plant to produce a second round of blooms in late summer.
