Zone: 4LITTLE SUZY BLACKEYED SUSAN
Rudbeckia fulgida var. speciosa 'Viette's Little Suzy' is a standout compact perennial prized for its refined habit and exceptional disease resistance. Discovered by the renowned Viette family of Virginia, it offers a more controlled alternative to the species, reaching a mature height of only 12 to 15 inches. It produces a prolific display of classic, star-shaped flowers with bright golden-yellow petals surrounding a prominent, dark chocolate central cone. One of its most distinctive features is its foliage; the leaves are narrower than those of 'Goldsturm' and often take on attractive mahogany or purple tones in the autumn, extending the plant's seasonal interest well past the blooming period.
For peak performance, 'Viette's Little Suzy' should be planted in full sun, though it is remarkably tolerant of light afternoon shade. It thrives in average, well-drained soil and is highly adaptable to various soil types, including those with higher clay content. Once established, it is notably drought-tolerant and handles the heat and humidity of the summer with ease.
Because it belongs to the fulgida species, it is significantly more resistant to Septoria leaf spot than many hirta varieties, maintaining clean, dark green foliage throughout the season. Its compact stature makes it an ideal choice for the front of a perennial border, mass plantings, or decorative containers.
