Zone: 5PRAIRIE GLOW BLACKEYED SUSAN
Rudbeckia triloba 'Prairie Glow' is a stunning and sophisticated cultivar of the native, Brown-Eyed Susan, valued for its unique, multi-toned floral display and airy architecture. Unlike the solid yellow of the straight species, 'Prairie Glow' produces an abundance of smaller, 2-inch blooms that feature a dramatic burnt-orange to deep red base with bright golden-yellow tips. As the flowers age, they often transition through a range of sunset hues, creating a glowing, bicolor effect across the entire plant. Reaching a mature height of 36 to 48 inches, 'Prairie Glow' maintains a highly branched, upright habit with slender but sturdy stems, providing a delicate, see-through texture that works beautifully in naturalized meadows or the middle to back of a perennial border.
For the most prolific blooming and vibrant color saturation, 'Prairie Glow' should be planted in full sun, though it is remarkably adaptable and can handle light afternoon shade better than many other Rudbeckias. It thrives in average, well-drained soil and is particularly noted for its ability to handle the intense heat and humidity of the mid-to-late summer. While technically a short-lived perennial or biennial, it is a vigorous self-seeder; leaving the flowers to mature on the plant ensures a fresh population of seedlings for the following year. It is an exceptional "bridge" plant, blooming from mid-summer well into autumn and providing a vital nectar source for butterflies and bees.
