SUNNY SMILEYZ™ BLACKEYED SUSAN

Rudbeckia hirta Sunny Smileyz® is a cheerful and exceptionally prolific cultivar from the SmileyZ® series, known for its classic, sun-drenched appearance. It produces large, single to semi-double blooms that are a solid, radiant golden-yellow, centered around a contrasting lime-green to dark brown cone. Bred specifically for a uniform and dense branching habit, it typically reaches a height of 18 to 24 inches, making it slightly more compact than some of its bicolor cousins. Its intense flower power and sturdy stems make it a reliable performer for adding bright, consistent color to mass plantings, commercial landscapes, and decorative mixed containers from early summer through the autumn months.

For the most vibrant display, Sunny Smileyz® should be planted in a location that receives full sun, as this ensures the most prolific blooming and maintains its tight, mounded shape. It thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil and, while it can withstand periods of dry weather once its root system is established, it benefits from regular watering during the peak of summer. Its bright, nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees and butterflies, making it a valuable addition to any pollinator-friendly garden.

The main difference between Rudbeckia fulgida and Rudbeckia hirta is in its flower size. The hirta cultivars have fewer, but larger flowers. Also, the Rudbeckia hirta stands more upright than the R. fulgida.
