SAHARA BLACKEYED SUSAN
Rudbeckia hirta 'Sahara' is a sophisticated take on the classic Black-Eyed Susan, specifically selected for its unique, vintage-inspired color palette. Unlike the bright golds of the species, the blooms of 'Sahara' are a muted mix of antique rose, burnt sienna, copper, and warm caramel, often featuring multi-layered, semi-double or fully double petals. These velvety flowers surround a prominent dark chocolate center and typically reach 3 to 4 inches in diameter. The plant itself maintains a compact and sturdy habit, reaching a height of 12 to 15 inches, making it a favorite for both high-end floral design and decorative garden borders. Its late-summer and autumn tones provide a "moody" aesthetic that transitions perfectly into the fall landscape.
For the most successful growth, 'Sahara' should be situated in a spot with full sun and average, well-drained soil. It is notably heat and drought-tolerant once its root system is established, though providing regular moisture will result in larger and more frequent blooms.
The main difference between Rudbeckia fulgida and Rudbeckia hirta is in its flower size. The hirta cultivars have fewer, but larger flowers. Also, the Rudbeckia hirta stands more upright than the R. fulgida.
