DENVER DAISY BLACKEYED SUSAN
Rudbeckia hirta 'Denver Daisy' is a high-impact cultivar known for its dramatic, oversized blooms and exceptional heat tolerance. This variety stands out with its 6-inch wide flowers featuring bright golden-yellow petals that are boldly splashed with a dark mahogany-red ring around a deep chocolate-brown central cone. Reaching a sturdy height of 18 to 24 inches, it was originally bred to commemorate Denver's 150th anniversary, proving its ability to thrive in tough, variable conditions.
For peak performance, 'Denver Daisy' should be planted in a location that receives full sun to ensure strong stems and a high flower count. It is highly adaptable to various soil types but performs best in well-drained soil with moderate fertility; once established, it demonstrates impressive drought resistance, making it suitable for water-wise landscapes. While it is often treated as a vigorous annual or short-lived perennial, it will reliably bloom in its first season.
The main difference between Rudbeckia fulgida and Rudbeckia hirta is in its flower size. The hirta cultivars have fewer, but larger flowers. Also, the Rudbeckia hirta stands more upright than the R. fulgida.
