BLACKEYED SUSAN

Rudbeckia (commonly known as Black-Eyed Susan) is a staple, workhorse native North American perennial and biennial genus celebrated for its long-lasting summer display and exceptional ruggedness. Typically growing 2 to 3 feet tall with a 1- to 2-foot spread, it forms upright clumps of coarse, lanceolate green foliage topped with prolific daisy-like blooms from midsummer straight through early fall. The blossoms feature golden-yellow ray petals surrounding a raised, dark chocolate-brown central cone, providing vibrant color when many spring perennials have finished. Its sturdy habit, pollinator-attracting blooms, and high resistance to pests and disease make it a backbone plant for native prairies, cottage gardens, and low-maintenance mass plantings.

Caring for generic Rudbeckia is remarkably simple due to its adaptiveness and drought tolerance once established. It performs best in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily) and well-draining soil, though it tolerates a wide variety of soil types ranging from clay to lean, sandy ground. Water regularly during its first growing season to set strong roots; once mature, it requires minimal supplemental watering except during extended heatwaves. Deadheading spent flower heads encourages continuous blooming throughout late summer, though leaving late-season cones intact into autumn provides valuable seed heads for overwintering songbirds like goldfinches.
