ALPINE CURRANT
Ribes alpinum is commonly referred to as Alpine Current. It is a compact shrub with a mounding habit. It features bright green lobed leaves in summer that turn yellow in fall. Small greenish-yellow flowers appear in spring and attract birds, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators. Stems are brown and may exfoliate as they mature. It is a dioecious plant (separate male and female plants). Bright red berries appear midsummer on female plants that attract many birds.
Alpine Current is extremely winter hardy and easy to grow in full sun to partial shade. It can even tolerate full shade. It enjoys average, well-drained soils and can tolerate some drought if established. It works well for shrub borders and hedge plantings and is deer and rabbit resistant.
