Rhododendron catawbiense 'Purpureum Elegans' is commonly referred to as Purpureum Elegans Rhododendron. It is a Catawba hybrid, specially bred to withstand harsh climates. It is a fast growing, broadleaf evergreen shrub that features large clusters of purple blooms with burgundy blotches that arrive late spring to early summer. Its glossy, elliptic leaves remain dark green throughout the year.
Purpureum Elegans Rhododendron is quite cold resistant and heat tolerant and thrives in partial shade in moist, acidic, humusy, well-drained soils. Morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal and it benefits with protection from harsh winter winds. It is perfect for borders, hedges or foundation plantings. Any pruning should be done right after flowering.
