Besse Howells Rhododendron is a R. catawbiense hybrid and features flowers that are openly funnel-shaped with deep purple-red petals and a deep red blotch. It has a open multi-stemmed, compact habit growing only 5-6 feet tall and wide.
Besse Howells Rhododendron thrives in partial sun in acidic, organically rich, humusy, evenly moist, well-drained soils. Morning sun and afternoon shade that is protected from strong winds would be ideal.
