Zone: 4PASQUE FLOWER
Pulsatilla vulgaris, the common Pasque Flower, is an iconic spring-blooming perennial celebrated for its bell-shaped, rich violet-purple blossoms that emerge in early spring, often while snow is still on the ground. Flowers feature a dense cluster of bright yellow stamens and are surrounded by a distinct "ruff" of silky, silvery-grey hairs. After blooms fade, it remains highly ornamental, developing feathery, plume-like seed heads that stand above its fern-like foliage, providing several weeks of additional interest in the garden.
For its ideal spot, Pasque Flower requires a position in full sun with exceptionally well-drained, fertile soil; it is particularly fond of calcareous or alkaline conditions, making it a great fit for rock gardens. Because it develops a deep, vertical taproot that can reach up to 3 feet into the soil, it is remarkably drought-tolerant once established but very difficult to transplant. It is best to choose a permanent location where it can remain undisturbed for years.
