RED PASQUE FLOWER

Pulsatilla vulgaris 'Rubra', commonly known as Red Pasque Flower, is an enchanting early-spring perennial that brings a unique texture and bold color to the garden. It is celebrated for its large, bell-shaped flowers in a rich shade of deep wine-red to burgundy, centered with a striking tuft of bright golden-yellow stamens. One of its most captivating features is the soft, silvery-grey "fur" that covers the stems, buds, and finely dissected, fern-like foliage, giving the plant a luminous, ethereal appearance. After the bloom, it remains ornamental as the flowers transition into fascinating, feathery seed heads that resemble swirling plumes of smoke.

For its ideal spot, 'Rubra' should be planted in full sun and placed in a location with exceptionally well-drained, gritty, or gravelly soil. Because it is native to alpine meadows and open grasslands, it thrives in alkaline to neutral conditions and is highly susceptible to crown rot if left in heavy, waterlogged soil during the winter. It develops a deep, woody taproot over time, which makes it quite drought-tolerant once established but also means it resents being moved; therefore, choosing a permanent home in a rock garden or a raised bed is essential. Maintenance is minimal, though leaving the decorative seed heads intact will provide interest through the early summer before the plant enters a period of semi-dormancy in the heat.
