The flesh is amber, firm, and clingstone, offering a sweet, rich flavor that makes it a favorite for fresh eating right off the tree. Beyond its harvest, 'Black Ruby' provides ornamental value in the spring when it is smothered in a cloud of delicate, fragrant white blossoms, followed by lush, pointed green foliage that creates a beautiful canopy throughout the summer months.
To ensure a bountiful harvest, 'Black Ruby' Plum should be planted in a location that receives full sun, as at least six to eight hours of direct light are necessary for proper fruit sugar development. It thrives in well-drained, loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH; avoid areas where water tends to collect, as plum trees are susceptible to root rot. While this variety is noted for its improved disease resistance, particularly against bacterial spot, regular pruning in late winter is still essential to maintain an open center for airflow and light penetration.
