Zone: 5TASSLE FERN
Polystichum polyblepharum, commonly known as the Japanese Tassel Fern, is an exquisite evergreen fern prized for its glossy, dark emerald fronds and formal, architectural symmetry. It forms a lush, shuttlecock-shaped mound that typically reaches 30 to 36 inches tall and 24-30 inches wide. The name "Tassel Fern" comes from the unique way the new fronds emerge in the spring: the tips of the unfurling "fiddleheads" droop downward like silken tassels before straightening out into stiff, leathery, and finely divided foliage. The stems are covered in distinctive golden-brown scales, providing a beautiful textural contrast against the shiny, deep green surfaces of the leaves.
Caring for the Japanese Tassel Fern is straightforward, provided it is given a sheltered, "woodland" environment. It thrives in partial to full shade and requires rich, humusy soil that stays consistently moist but well-drained; it does not tolerate soggy or stagnant water, which can lead to crown rot. While it appreciates high humidity, it is surprisingly resilient once established in a protected spot away from drying winds.
