VARIEGATED SOLOMONS SEAL
Polygonatum odoratum 'Variegatum', commonly known as Variegated Solomon's Seal, is an elegant woodland perennial and a classic member of the Lily-of-the-Valley Series (within the broader Asparagaceae family). It is celebrated for its graceful, arching red-tinted stems that reach a height of 18 to 24 inches, carrying pairs of soft green leaves edged in a crisp, creamy white. In late spring, small, bell-shaped white flowers dangle in pairs from the leaf axils, emitting a subtle, sweet fragrance. This plant is a recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, prized for adding both a structural element and a bright, illuminating texture to shaded garden areas.
For its ideal spot, Variegated Solomon's Seal thrives in partial to full shade, where its variegated foliage can act as a natural highlight in darker corners. It prefers rich, moist, and organic soils but is remarkably adaptable once established, showing a fair amount of drought tolerance compared to other woodland species. It spreads slowly by thick, underground rhizomes to form a lush colony over time, making it an excellent choice for naturalizing under the canopy of large trees or alongside ferns and Hostas. Maintenance is very low; simply cut the stems back to the ground in late fall after the foliage has turned an attractive buttery yellow.
