BAMBINO® BLUE JACOBS LADDER
Polemonium viscosum Bambino® Blue is a delightful dwarf selection within the Bambino® series, specifically bred for its exceptionally compact and uniform growth habit. It stands out for its fine-textured, pinnate foliage that forms a dense, low-growing tuft, typically reaching only 12 to 15 inches in height. In late spring to early summer, it produces clusters of large, lavender-blue, cup-shaped flowers that sit just above the foliage on sturdy stems. The flowers are lightly fragrant and contrast beautifully with the deep green, fern-like leaves, making it a perfect addition to rock gardens, alpine troughs, or the very front of a perennial border where its small stature won't be overshadowed.
For its ideal spot, Bambino® Blue should be planted in a location with full sun to partial shade and very well-drained soil. Unlike some of its woodland relatives, it is particularly sensitive to "wet feet," so ensuring excellent drainage is critical to preventing root rot, especially during the winter months. It thrives in gravelly or sandy loams and appreciates a site that mimics its native mountain habitat. Maintenance is minimal; simply deadheading the spent flower clusters will keep the plant looking tidy and may encourage a smaller secondary flush of blooms. Because of its petite size and specific drainage needs, it is often best showcased in a raised bed or a decorative container where its delicate features can be viewed up close.
