ASTRA™ PINK BALLOON FLOWER
Platycodon grandiflorus Astra™ Pink is a charming perennial that adds a soft, delicate hue to the summer garden with its pale shell-pink blossoms. Like other members of its Astra™ series, Astra™ Pink is highly valued for its oversized, 2 to 3-inch flowers that start as unique, balloon-like buds before opening into wide, star-shaped bells. The petals often feature subtle, deeper pink veining that provides a lovely textured look. Reaching a compact height of 9 to 12 inches, its tidy, mounded growth habit makes it a perfect candidate for edging walkways or adding a splash of pastel color to mixed container displays.
For Astra™ Pink's ideal spot, choose a location with full sun to light, dappled shade where the soil is rich, loamy and well-drained. While it can handle some heat, it performs best when its fleshy taproot is kept cool and undisturbed, so it is wise to select a permanent home for it rather than trying to transplant it later. It is generally deer-resistant and easy to care for once established, though it is one of the last perennials to wake up in the spring. Keeping the soil consistently moist but never soggy will ensure a prolific bloom cycle from mid-summer through the early weeks of autumn.
