Zone: 4DOUBLE BLUE BALLOON FLOWER
Platycodon grandiflorus Astra™ Double Blue is a standout perennial that brings both architectural interest and vibrant color to the summer landscape. Before they fully bloom, the flower buds swell into whimsical, balloon-like shapes that eventually burst open into thick, leathery, violet-blue petals. Astra™ Double Blue Balloon Flower is prized for its double-layered blooms, which offer a much fuller and more dramatic appearance than the standard single varieties. Growing in a tidy, compact mound that typically reaches 9 to 12 inches in height, it is an excellent choice for the front of a perennial border or as a focal point in decorative patio containers.
For the best results, plant Astra™ Double Blue in a location that receives full sun to part shade, ensuring it gets at least six hours of light to promote the strongest stems and most prolific flowering. It thrives in well-drained, organic soil and is relatively drought-tolerant once its deep taproot is established. Because this taproot is fleshy and sensitive to being moved, it is best to choose a permanent "ideal spot" where it won't be disturbed. You should also be mindful that this plant is notoriously slow to emerge in the spring; marking the planting site will help you avoid accidental damage during early season maintenance.
