BLUE MAGOO ENGELMANN SPRUCE
Picea engelmannii 'Blue Magoo' is commonly called Blue Magoo Engelmann Spruce. This striking cultivar of the Engelmann Spruce is celebrated by enthusiasts for its intense, powder-blue foliage. Unlike the typical species, 'Blue Magoo' is a semi-dwarf selection that maintains a dense, broadly pyramidal habit. Its needles are notably thicker and more vibrant than other blue spruce varieties, often appearing almost silvery-white in certain lights. Because of its slower growth rate, typically averaging about 6 to 10 inches per year, it is an excellent choice for medium-sized landscapes or as a focal point in a conifer garden where space might be a constraint.
To keep this spruce thriving, it should be planted in full sun to ensure the blue coloration remains vivid and the branching stays tight. It prefers moist, well-drained, and slightly acidic soil and does not tolerate "wet feet" or standing water, which can lead to root rot. While it is cold hardy (thriving in zones 3 through 7), it appreciates some protection from scorching, dry winds in its youth. Once established, 'Blue Magoo' is relatively low-maintenance and rarely requires pruning to maintain its tidy, symmetrical shape, making it a wonderful and beautiful addition to the landscape.

Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and promote healthy growth.
