PICKLEBALL™ NINEBARK

Pickleball™ Ninebark (Pickleball™ Physocarpus opulifolius 'SMNPOE' USPPAF, Can PBRA) is a Proven Winners® selection and prized for its exceptionally compact and rounded growth habit. Reaching a mature size of only 2 to 4 feet in height and spread, Pickleball™ offers a tidy, structural presence that avoids the leggy appearance common in older varieties. It features dense, vibrant green foliage that remains lush throughout the growing season, serving as a crisp backdrop for the clusters of white, nectar-rich flowers that appear in late spring. As it matures, it develops the characteristic peeling, exfoliating bark that gives the species its name, providing a subtle architectural element to the garden during the winter months.

Physocarpus Pickleball™ is low-maintenance and adapts easily to a variety of environmental conditions, thriving in full sun to part shade and showing significant resistance to powdery mildew. It is quite versatile regarding soil types and becomes drought-tolerant once established. Pickleball™ is ideal for tight spaces such as foundation plantings under low windows or as a uniform low hedge along walkways. Its hardy nature and refined shape make it a perfect solution for modern urban landscapes where horizontal space is at a premium but visual impact is still required.

Planting Tips

To help this plant settle in and thrive, we recommend these standard planting practices: Plant in well-draining soil with full sun to partial shade (full sun brings out the best foliage color). Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots. Mulch around the base to retain moisture. Prune immediately after the spring flowering period to maintain shape and encourage dense growth; avoid pruning in late winter or early spring, as this will remove the flower buds for the coming season.
