VIOLET PINWHEELS MOSS PHLOX

Phlox 'Violet Pinwheels' is a ground-breaking hybrid that combines the best traits of Phlox subulata and Phlox bifida. Developed by Dr. Jim Ault at the Chicago Botanic Garden, 'Violet Pinwheels' is distinguished by its unique floral architecture; each violet-purple petal features a deep notch at the tip, giving the blooms a distinct "pinwheel" appearance. In mid-spring, it produces a dense, horizontal carpet of vibrant color that is noticeably more intense than many traditional creeping varieties. Its habit is low-growing and spreading, with fine-textured, needle-like foliage that creates a thick, mossy mat capable of suppressing weeds and stabilizing soil on slopes.

The ideal spot for 'Violet Pinwheels' Phlox is a location in full sun with well-drained, even gritty or rocky soil. Thanks to its P. bifida (Sand Phlox) heritage, it is exceptionally drought-tolerant and handles lean, poor soils with ease. For the best care, it is recommended to shear the foliage back by about one-third after the spring bloom has finished. This encourages a fresh, dense flush of deep green foliage and maintains a tight, carpet-like form throughout the summer.
