SCARLET FLAME CREEPING PHLOX

Phlox subulata 'Scarlet Flame' is one of the most popular and time-tested cultivars of creeping phlox, renowned for its exceptionally bright and cheerful presence in the spring garden. This vigorous groundcover produces a dense, low-growing mat of needle-like foliage that becomes completely smothered in vibrant, deep scarlet-pink to carmine-red flowers in mid-to-late spring. Each star-shaped flower features a small, dark red eye at the center, which intensifies the overall "flame" effect. Because of its reliable spreading habit and intense floral density, it is an ideal choice for creating a striking wash of color across large areas or for providing a bold contrast against gray stone walls.

The ideal spot for Phlox 'Scarlet Flame' is a location with full sun and excellent drainage, as it thrives in lean, gritty, or sandy soils where water does not sit. To maintain a lush and carpet-like appearance, it is highly recommended to shear the stems back by about half immediately after the flowering period concludes in early summer. This prevents it from becoming leggy and encourages a fresh flush of deep green foliage that remains attractive through the summer and fall.
