RED WING CREEPING PHLOX
Phlox subulata 'Red Wing' is widely considered one of the most vibrant and striking cultivars of creeping phlox, prized for its exceptionally bold and saturated color. In mid-to-late spring, this vigorous groundcover phlox is nearly hidden beneath a profusion of bright, crimson-pink to reddish-magenta flowers, each marked by a distinct, contrasting dark red eye at the center. The star-shaped blossoms are held in dense clusters above a mat of fine, needle-like, semi-evergreen foliage. Because of its spreading habit and intense floral display, it is an outstanding choice for adding a high-impact wash of color to the front of a border or for naturalizing along a sunny walkway.
The ideal spot for Phlox 'Red Wing' is a location that receives full sun and has excellent drainage, as it performs best in gritty or sandy soils that do not hold excess moisture. Its care is relatively low-maintenance; however, to maintain a tidy and dense appearance, it is beneficial to shear it back by about half once the flowering cycle has finished in early summer. This practice stimulates fresh, lush green growth and prevents the center from becoming woody or sparse. The foliage color remains a consistent, rich deep green throughout the spring and summer.
