Zone: 4ROCKY ROAD GRAPE™ PHLOX
Phlox Rocky Road Grape™ is a vibrant entry in the Rocky Road™ series, a collection of hybrid spring phlox bred for a more compressed, tidy growth habit and superior durability compared to traditional creeping varieties. The Rocky Road™ series is particularly valued for its "flower power," as the plants become completely smothered in blooms during the mid-to-late spring. Rocky Road Grape™ produces striking red-purple flowers with unique notched petals that create a textured, carpet-like effect. Because it spreads more slowly and stays tighter than standard Phlox subulata, it is an excellent choice for precision edging or for filling small gaps in a landscape without becoming invasive.
To keep Rocky Road Grape™ Phlox thriving, it should be planted in a location that receives full sun, which ensures dense flower coverage and maintains its compact shape. Unlike many garden phlox, Rocky Road Grape™ is exceptionally drought-tolerant once established and actually prefers gritty, well-drained soil, making it a perfect candidate for rock gardens, sunny slopes, or difficult parkway strips. It is also notably salt-tolerant, which is a great selling point for customers with roadside plantings. After the spring bloom has finished, it is a good idea to shear the plant back slightly to clean up the spent foliage and encourage fresh, green growth that will remain attractive throughout the rest of the season.
